Geometry was a practise extensive in the Middle East. Geometry was believed to be a universal language, one which spoke of the multiplicity, a metaphor for our collective humanity, each one of us an individual yet part of a network forming a larger, more complicated, more beautifully woven pattern.
With an interest in the unseen, Yasmin Hayat experimented with overlaying the sub-grid of this particular pattern, she pulled out elements of it out and pushed others into the foreground, the result being this dynamic geometric painting which exists between the planes of the seen and unseen.
The original design is seen adorning the walls surrounding the main entrance to the Ummayad mosque in Damascus. The grandest, most dear building to all Syrians. Yasmin Hayat painted this geometric piece twice, this being a stand-alone piece, the other existing within her painting ‘For the Love of Damascus’ where it sits around the grand entrance to the building.
This painting is now part of a private collection but prints are still available to buy. To get your print please contact info@yasminhayat.com
